77% of Female Adolescents in Uganda Are Sexually Active
A study carried out by the Uganda ministry of health Epidemiology department in western Uganda has revealed that 77% of female adolescents in that region are sexually active.
According to senior Epidemiologist, Susan Wakoli , the characteristics of female adolescents and some of their partners attending out patient clinics at Fort Portal western region referral Hospital indicated that 74% of the adolescent teenage girls are in sexual relationship.
Suzan Waako, who is based at the Uganda National Institute of Public Health, says majority of these girls are school dropouts between 15-24 years who engage in sexual relationship for business.
She recommended communities and the government to start sexuality education from family level and provision of HIV prevention measures to this age group.
She said,” We recommend that parents start teaching their children about the dangers of getting involved in sex while still young. That will help all the girls including those continuing with education and even those who later drop out of education.”
She however said that according to their study, most of the partners who get involved in sex with the young girls are circumcised which is good because it reduces on chances of spreading HIV/Aids.
